These reels are built for extreme situations and combine fast retrieve with an extremely low transmission gear, which puts the angler in the position to force the fish to the surface with "relatively" little effort. The middle gear lies between the two extreme ranges. Certainly not a reel for every location, but it may be advantageous in certain situations.
